“You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book.”
Psalm 56:8 (NLT)
For the first few years of widowhood, I cried more tears of grief than I ever thought possible—so many that I wondered if there was any left to cry. Countless nights, I cried myself to sleep, my pillow soaked with tears. In public, I found myself apologizing for tears that slipped out, as if grief were something to be ashamed of. Maybe worse than that, was it a sign that my faith was weak?
Then I remembered Jesus’s response to Mary at Lazarus’ tomb in John 11:17-36.
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
John 11:33 (NIV)
He didn’t scold Mary for her tears. Instead, he understood her pain and WEPT WITH HER.
Aren’t you glad we have a Savior who weeps with those who weep?
There is no shame in our tears; they are part of how God created us.
It is said that in Ancient Rome, mourners often kept small bottles or vials to catch their tears which they would then place in the grave of the deceased to express their love and symbolize their grief.
Although there is no record that the Israelites participated in this ritual, they would have culturally understood the imagery that David used in Psalm 56.
It gives a tender picture of God’s compassion.
Through the imagery of Psalm 56, David assures us that God notices every pain, every sorrow, and every tear—even the ones no one else sees. Especially the ones no one else sees!
The bottle and the book paint a picture of remembrance, showing us that God keeps and records our grief because it is precious to Him.
When Scripture tells us that God keeps our tears in His bottle, it promises that He never wastes, forgets, or overlooks a single drop of our suffering.
It brought enormous comfort to my heart to know that God saw and treasured my tears, the overflow of my heartache, because He loves me.
God doesn’t waste our pain.
As we journey through grief, God doesn’t leave our pain unused. Instead, He works through it in ways that shape us, teach us, and allow us to bless others.
God takes every tear, every ache, and every sorrow and weaves them purposefully into His plan for us.
The Bible reminds us that in this world we will face trouble, sorrow, and grief—but even in the darkest moments, God’s love can turn our pain into joy.
“You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.”
John 16:20b (NIV)
In the midst of our sorrow, He uses our grief to:
- Show us our deep need for Him—drawing us into prayer and His Word, where hope can begin to mend our broken hearts.
- Open doors for ministry—our sorrow equips us to extend the same comfort we have received, giving hope to those walking a similar path.
- Display His goodness—God can turn our stories of brokenness into powerful testimonies of His healing and faithfulness.
Praise God that our tears are not forever!
God will someday redeem our tears when He wipes them all away FOR GOOD!
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Revelation 21:4 (NIV)
Tears for a season are normal and even healthy.
Tears are not a sign of weakness—they’re a natural, healthy response to emotional or physical stress. They are God’s way of helping us release the sorrow and pain that weighs on our hearts. They help us release our emotions instead of letting them build up inside, bringing both physical relief and emotional healing. Every tear we shed is a signal that our hearts are processing grief.
Grief can linger and make it difficult to continue with daily life. If that happens, consider reaching out to a pastor or biblical counselor.
“You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book.”
Psalm 56:8 (NLT)
The ancient imagery of tear bottles helps us to see just how deeply God cares about us. He may not literally keep bottles of tears on a shelf, but He does something greater. He records, remembers, and redeems every sorrow.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You see every tear we shed and hold each one close to Your heart. Thank You that our pain is never wasted, and that You can turn our sorrow into joy, our grief into hope, and our brokenness into testimony. Comfort us in the moments when our hearts feel heavy. Remind us that we are never alone, and help us trust Your perfect plan, even when we don’t understand it. Teach us to bring our pain to You in prayer, to lean on Your Word for strength, and to extend the comfort we receive to others who are hurting. May every tear we shed draw us closer to You and be used for Your glory.
