I am ignored as if I were dead, as if I were a broken pot.
Psalm 31:12 NLT
I fell into a trap of laziness yesterday morning when trying to reach a small tray I wanted to send to Goodwill. Too hurried to get the step ladder from the garage, I decided to retrieve it from the top shelf by stepping on the lower cabinet and reaching behind a stack of plates on the top shelf.
Success! I reached it!
Now to retrieve it from its berth…
Calamity! The whole stack of plates in front of the tray cascaded from the top shelf, skimmed the lower shelves, bounced off the granite countertop, and landed in pieces on the floor below.
What a mess to clean up!
What could have been a simple action became an all day clean-up project that included sweeping, vacuuming, moping, cleaning appliances and reorganizing shelves.
As I stood there looking at the mess I created, I reflected on the status of my life. The Lord has always been there to clean up the messes I make in my life, even when I’ve crashed and shattered into smithereens. In the midst of all the broken glass and pottery, I offered God a prayer of thanksgiving for teaching me a lesson and always being there to clean me up when I’ve made my life a mess.
Gazing at the beautiful old Wedgwood pieces splattered on the floor below, I wondered if I should save some of the blue and white pottery to use for something else, a craft project or something. Ultimately, I decided I probably would never use the pieces; I was just reluctant to throw them away because they were once my grandmother’s. So as I swept the chunks and shards into the dust pan, I recalled for a moment how excited my grandmother was to receive these as a gift, then dumped them into the trash.
That’s not what God does with us when we are broken!
He doesn’t just clean us up from our messes. He picks up our pieces and makes us whole again! It doesn’t matter to Him if we are broken from grief, from poverty, from despair, from illness, from divorce, from addiction or countless other things that break our spirit. He picks up each piece of our life and puts it back in place with His love, a glue that never runs out and never wears out.
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
2 Cor. 5:17 NLT
How awesome it is to know we are made whole again in Christ’s love!
Let us pray: Thank You, Father in Heaven, for sending Your Son to us Your broken people. May You send us Your Holy Spirit to guide us as we continue our journey to completeness in You! Amen
