Do you ever stand in your closet wondering what to put on?
It could be you have too many to choose from or it could be you are tired of wearing the same thing every day. Either way and somewhere in the middle, we find ourselves wondering what to wear.
But do you ever find yourself wondering what to wear spiritually?
There are some verses great verses that tell us to “put on” and to “put off”. I find myself needing this reminder since I can rush out the door consumed with the day’s agenda, without giving a thought to my spiritual health. It happens once, twice, three times, and by then it becomes forgotten. My spiritual habits are forgotten.
How about you?
Here are a few of the verses I found in the New Testament that encouraged me to wear my spiritual clothes every day.
(all verses NIV)
“and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Ephesians 4:24
“Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor”
Ephesians 4:25
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
Ephesians 6:11
“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
Ephesians 6:13
“and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”
Colossians 3:10
“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in unity”
Colossians 3:14
“But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.”
1 Thessalonians 5:8
And then there are verses on clothing yourselves…
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Colossians 3:12-13
“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Romans 13:14
“for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
Galatians 3:27
“In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
I Peter 5:5
Choose one from the list of things to put on or clothe yourself with each day before you walk out of your bathroom. Put it on a sticky note where you will see it each morning. Stick it on your mirror or steering wheel. Stick it to the inside of one of the cupboard doors in the kitchen. This is one way to hide God’s Word in your heart. Why do we need to do that?
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 (NIV)
We widows will not sit idly by in our spiritual growth.
We are still here. Still breathing. And most importantly, we have the Holy Spirit within us, strengthening us. We never have to do this on our own.
Lord God, show me exactly when we can spend time together. I really want to keep growing. I want to set my sights higher than just surviving. Show me, guide me, lead me so I don’t leave home without my spiritual clothing. Amen
