For everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under Heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (paraphrased)
Spring has always been one of my favorite times of the year. As my son Ty and I were potting a Lemon Tree and a few flowers last week, I thought of all of the times my late husband Michael and I worked in the flower beds together this time of year. We talked about how spring gave us hope and reminded us of God’s mercy and grace, “making old things new …” and how just when it seems there is no hope or life for the plants and trees, they burst with shades of green.
“And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also, he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’”
Revelation 21:5 (ESV)
Just mere weeks ago, the trees stood bare, the grasses brown, and flowers were rare. It could be tough to see the transition that would take place just a short time later. It can feel that way with grief, too. I remember those first days, weeks and months following my husband Michael’s suicide, I felt there was no earthly way my life could be restored into anything bright, beautiful or hopeful. I was right, there was no earthly way.
But God took my broken pieces and put me back together.
He turned my horrific circumstances and hopeless thoughts into a beautiful relationship with Him. Only He can do that!
“And provide for those who grieve in Zion, to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.”
Isaiah 61:3 (NIV)
Spring is a manifestation of the truth that Jesus says He will make everything new in its time. No matter where you are in your grief and struggles today, remember every single year, right on time, God makes all things new.
“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord, my God, I will praise you forever.”
Psalm 30:11-12 (NIV)
Jesus, You are sovereign, You are good and You know exactly what You’re doing. Lead us into Your will for our lives. Help us to follow Your calling and lean in, even when it seems dark and hopeless. Just as You restore the plants and flowers of the earth each spring, we know You can restore our lives. Thank You for Your mercy and grace. Amen.
