Tomorrow, Jan. 15, marks four years since my husband Michael took his last breath on earth and first breath in eternity – A day that feels like a lifetime ago but one I can return to instantaneously. Though there are days that knock me to my knees and getting up seems nearly impossible, most days I try to focus on the eternity part and how God wants to use our story for His good.
After Michael’s death, I felt the need to do something big – start a nonprofit, continue his entrepreneurial spirit and start a business he was passionate about, travel the world to share Jesus – to ensure his death, and my pain and sorrow, would not be in vain. But what I’ve learned, is that “big” isn’t always what’s needed. It’s the small things that bring big impact.
Since the first few months of this journey, I have been transparent with our story in hopes others can see Jesus working in our midst. He wants to do that for all of us – not just me! Before I experienced the unfathomable, I believed wholeheartedly the stories in the Bible and the stories of the Lord miraculously working in other’s lives were indeed true. I was just unsure He would work that way in mine. But He did!
Surrendering to His will for our lives allowed me to clearly hear the Lord speak. By no accident, I have been placed in moments to easily share our story, time and time again. And when I remarried two years ago, my prayers shifted from guidance for the path I was on, to asking the Lord where He wanted our family as my husband Keith and I were looking to purchase a home.
Things seamlessly fell into place as we moved to a small suburb north of Dallas that I would have never imagined. I’ve fallen in love with this little community. Here, I have proactively shared my story (when appropriate) like never before – with my neighbors, parents of my boys’ friends, and those I meet in the community.
A repeating theme in the ministry of Jesus was his willingness to socialize with people. The first event, after His formal ministry began, was the wedding where he turned water into wine. He was continually socializing, conversing with others, seeing that many needed empathy, validation and comfort.
We think we have to plan a mission trip around the world or start an organization linked to our husbands. Often times this can seem so overwhelming that we do nothing. But here’s the good news – we can minister to anyone, anywhere, just by being social and sharing what God has done!
“In that day you will say: ‘Give praise to the Lord, proclaim His name; make known among the nations what He has done and proclaim His name is exalted.'”
Isaiah 12:4
“Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:15-16
As humans, we can sometimes question things when the horrific happens, but sisters, you can be confident of this: God doesn’t place us in the wrong place or at the wrong address. God placed us HERE for these moments. When I finally experienced His sovereignty, it was a game changer. I know now ministry doesn’t always have to be done across the world, it’s as simple as walking across the street.
As I head into year five, not a day goes by that Michael isn’t thought about and missed. However, I have seen the incredible ways God has used our tragedy, pain and grief for eternal good and am forever grateful for a faithful, merciful God who stands by us through it all!
Lord, help us to share your work in our lives. Calm our fears and feelings of vulnerability so you can use us to help others experience your grace and faithfulness. Thank you for never leaving our side. Amen.
