Science was never really my “thing”.
But I took four of the kids to the school science event anyway. We went from room to room to do experiments with the teachers. In one of the classrooms we poured milk in a plate. (Take notes; you might need this idea for a science fair project or to impress the grandchildren!) We did some hypothesizing then put four drops of food coloring in the milk pan. Nothing much happened to our milk pan until we dropped some soap (Dawn or Joy type) in the pan.
Any guesses as to what happened? It was so cool! It looked like milk tie-dye! The teacher called it “Reaching Equilibrium”.
The thought hit me, “What a great idea for an article!” But I first had to figure out what it meant! Not being very “science minded”, I first had to define it.
Equilibrium: e·qui·lib·ri·um:
a state of rest or balance due to the equal action of opposing forces.
It has to do with finding balance again after a time of imbalance. Haven’t you felt that way? We had equal opposing forces pulling at us – the force of sanity and the force of grief. We felt like we were walking a tight-rope between the two. At any moment we might go over the edge into insanity.
I believe when we are at critical moments, those crossroads in our lives, we MUST throw ourselves totally at the foot of the Cross. Yet we try to make it on our own. We try to push through the grief, but we continue to find ourselves teetering on the brim of emotional disaster.
We know all that, right? We have lived it, daily. So where is our balance found? And then this verse came to my mind.
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;”
2 Corinthians 4:7-8 (NIV)
“Hard pressed”
“Crushed”
“Perplexed”
Those are the opposing forces that come on “every side”.
When those external forces come, we must have something on the inside that is stronger to balance it. “This all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
That is the key to reaching equilibrium.
God’s power shines through all the cracks and pits in our jar of clay.
- When God nudges us out of bed even though we don’t feel like it
- When we tackle a difficult task at home through supernatural wisdom
- When we make it through the Bible study or worship service by focusing on Christ and not our fears
- When we share our story of God’s faithfulness with someone who needs to be encouraged
- When we can reach out to help someone else in need
Have you noticed your depending on self or God? Go to the foot of the cross. Throw yourself completely on your Maker.
He loves you.
He knows you.
He has forgiven you.
Sister, today make an appointment to spend some alone time with God to find your equilibrium for that moment. He is there waiting for you, wanting to help you restore the balance in your world. I have to return again and again, moment by moment. But He is ALWAYS there, with open arms.
Heavenly Father, You made me and You love me. Give me peace in that thought today. Guide me to the balance that You have for me today. Thank You for the redemption You offer at the Cross. Amen
