I promise…two simple words and yet so powerful.
The nature of a promise is that if I promise you something, you can count on the outcome to be certain. It’s like a verbal contract.
We like promises when they are kept, but when someone breaks a promise, it causes us to question a person’s integrity and the value of their words. We will have doubts about their intentions the next time they make a promise. In essence, our trust is broken. For some of us maybe the idea of a promise doesn’t mean much because we’ve seen promises just as easily broken as made. And before long, we begin to distrust anyone, including God.
But He is precisely the One with whom we can trust!
How do I know? Over and over again, the writers of the Bible give us examples that prove God’s Word can be trusted. Just take a walk through the Hall of Faith in Hebrews for the shortlist of men and women who took God at His Word and found Him to be faithful.
It is estimated that there is over 7000 promises in the Bible!
And God’s word tells us that He has kept every one of them! (Psalm 145:13)
But how can we know that He will keep His promises to us today?
It is for the same reason the heroes of the faith trusted God to keep His promise from the very beginning. God is a God of character and by His nature, He is bound to keep His promises.
He is unchanging (James 1:17 NIV)
God never makes a promise that He does not want to keep; He won’t make a promise and then change His mind.
He is in control
In theological terms, we call this the Sovereignty of God. There is nothing that can stop Him from keeping His promises because He is sovereign over all. He is unstoppable!
He cannot lie (Numbers 23:19 NIV)
God is not like us. He cannot lie! So when He gives His Word (makes a promise) we can count on that promise to be kept.
He is always faithful
I love the way David says it in Psalm 138:2:
“I will give thanks to Your name for Your unfailing love and faithfulness, because Your promises are backed by all the honor of Your name.”
David knew that God was not just a PROMISE MAKER but He was also a PROMISE KEEPER.
As widows, there are circumstances that we don’t understand surrounding our husbands’ deaths. There are innumerable why questions and very few answers. These can all make it very hard to trust.
But if we are ever to find peace amidst our grief, we must learn to trust. When we place our trust in Him, God’s Word tells us that peace will follow.
Isaiah 26:3-4
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.
Therefore, the question is not if God will keep His promises, but if we will put our trust in the unchanging, unstoppable, faithful God who will keep every one of His promises.
God’s promises were meant to allow us to enjoy the best possible life we can have. A life of rest and peace!
In the following months, we will explore some of these promises. Please stay tuned! And in the meantime, search God’s Word for examples of His faithfulness to His promises. For a deeper study, I suggest researching the names of God, which will expose His character and nature.
Lord, we live in a broken world filled with lies and deceit and because of that, we live in a state of always questioning motives and integrity. I pray that You will show us just who You are as we search the scriptures. I pray You will strengthen us to trust in Your promises.
