“It’s too much, Lord.”
Those are the words I spoke aloud as I was driving alone last week. After going back and forth to doctors, one of my bonus sons was admitted to the ER and hospitalized for several days. It was a busy time, and we had a few additional stressful situations happening within our household. It all felt like more than I could handle. And brought me back to the feelings I had those days and weeks after my late husband Michael’s passing when I felt helpless, and life was beyond difficult.
As I continued driving, I began to pray, “Lord, You know our situation, You are not surprised, and I know You are in control. Help me relinquish this worry and anxiety and remind me of Your sovereignty in all circumstances. Amen.”
As I look back on my life, especially after losing my husband Michael, I can see that the Lord was with me. He was always there; He always has been and always will be. He took care of my son and me then, and I know he will get us through whatever we face today and in the future, even if it’s not what I had planned.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
That’s a promise that brings hope and confidence!
When we go through hard things – the unthinkable, like losing our husband or a diagnosis, or even the day-to-day challenges that pile up – it can bring worry and doubt. But when we pray and remember to lean on the ONE who says “fear not” we can have peace through it all.
When I say I’m scared, the LORD says:
"Do not fear; for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
When I say I can’t do this, the Lord says:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
When I say it’s too much, the Lord says:
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
When I say I’m not strong enough, the Lord says:
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
In these verses, God (Jesus) is talking to the Israelites, Joshua, the Christian community, and Paul.
But the Lord is aware of our fears and doubts, too, and He whispers the same encouragement to us that He spoke to them.
He’s got us, no matter what!
Lord, this life and journey of widowhood can be overwhelming. Give us strength and hope to get through the most difficult of circumstances. Ease our minds of worry and doubt and remind us that You are in control of it all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
