“When my worry is great within me, Your comfort brings joy to my soul.”
Psalm 94:19 (NLV)
HEADLINES
My husband was a man of routine. Let something happen to change up that routine, and his entire day was off. His ‘start the day’ routine was coffee and his newspaper.
It was never a problem that I wasn’t a newspaper reader, I was well-informed because of his very serious study of that paper.
On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, Steve sat on an American Airlines plane ready to depart DFW Airport for a business meeting in Chicago. An announcement from the pilot informed the passengers there would be a flight delay. None of those passengers were aware of what was transpiring at that moment. It wasn’t until they were led off the plane and entered a totally evacuated and silent airport, that they found out our homeland had been attacked.

United in War and Tragedy
The 20th anniversary of that tragic September day is upon us. Each one of us can remember exactly where we were when we heard of this attack. Word traveled fast…just in time for many to watch in shock as the second plane flew into the second tower.
The world became silent. We came together, one nation under God. We flew our flags. Eye contact was made with our fellow Americans, acknowledging our unity and our desperate need for each other as we waited for our leader’s response to the enemy’s attack.
Our hope is not in the ‘kings’ of this world.
Where we have never placed the title of ‘king’ on President Biden, or Presidents of past administrations, we look to our leaders in times of trouble, and do once again, as we watch headlines from Afghanistan, heartsick over the news of casualties.
Our husbands may never have been called a king nor worn a crown of royalty while sitting in their recliners watching their favorite team play, but for us, they were our protectors and advisors, their words calming our fears. They were similar to the kings of old, protecting their kingdoms and providing for their needs.
This season of widowhood has been a hard one for us. Fear threatens to overwhelm and rob us of peace as we wade our way through grief, and work to trust Him in all things.
Trust has become a minute-by-minute exercise, hasn’t it? With every news report, fear gains power and threatens to paralyze. I have felt such a desperate need to talk to my husband, to help me make sense of current world events. Sadly, that need seems to have magnified, reignited, my grief.
Who do we turn to?
Our King
“They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings.”
Revelation 17:14a (NIV)
What do we know about our King?
Our God is mighty in power, our fierce protector. He makes no mistakes and can be trusted in all things. His timing is perfect, and nothing is impossible for Him.
He is our refuge, our strong tower. He is our Hope in every storm.
And we must always remember…
We can trust our King.
“Look to the Lord and His strength;
seek His face always.”
Psalm 105:4 (NIV)
Dear Heavenly Father, chaos abounds in our world today, but Your Kingdom and Authority never change. We ask You to give wisdom to our leaders and ears that they may hear. Help us to be unafraid as we look to You and Your strength. Amen
