Hurry up and wait. I don’t know about you, but I’ve found myself in countless situations where the phrase “hurry up and wait” perfectly sums up my experience. Whether it was during my season of singleness in my 20s, navigating high-risk pregnancies in my 30s, enduring Norm’s COVID health crisis in my 40s, or facing life without him in these last three years, that sense of waiting has been a constant companion.
In each of these moments, what I was often waiting for were answers—answers giving direction, about healing, about restoration, about what was to come.
During each of these times, I knew God was on the throne, sovereign over my life, and working out His good and perfect plan. But that didn’t make the waiting easy. Waiting can be incredibly challenging. It can feel like you’re on a rollercoaster of emotions, with unanswered questions swirling around you, threatening to dump you out of your seat and into a freefall.
Yet, in the midst of this, what God can do in our hearts and minds as we wait is something truly beautiful.
I wrote the verse below on September 27, 2021—just ten days before Norm passed. That period of waiting was excruciating, each day filled with unknowns, with one crisis following another. And yet, in the middle of all that waiting, God was right there with me.
The Waiting:
“There is so much to be said for being in this place of waiting.
It’s hard. It seems so long when you are in the middle of it. It’s frustrating and feels unfair.
But God says wait.
So I wait.
And as I wait I see Him at work.
And I see Him using this place of waiting to draw people closer to Him,
Restoring/strengthening relationships,
Providing perspective,
Deepening prayer lives.
And my faith is strengthened,
Hope is renewed,
Trust is deepened,
And I’m learning to lean,
And to be thankful for each day.
So I continue to wait. Thank you for waiting with me.”
“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the Land of the living. Wait on the Lord: Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart: Wait I say on the Lord.”
Psalms 27:13-14 (NKJV)
That period of waiting was incredibly excruciating, yet God was right there with me in the midst of it all—working, moving, restoring, and strengthening. And He is still with me today. The beautiful thing is, He is with you too, in the middle of your waiting. Whatever your situation looks like, whatever it is you’re waiting for—no matter how deep, how hard, or how impossible it seems—He is with you.
He loves you, He is faithful, and He is so very good.
Heavenly Father, I lift up each one reading this who is in a place of waiting. Waiting for healing, direction, guidance, or provision, whatever the need, Father, I pray that they will experience You in this time of waiting. I pray that Your peace will calm their hearts and minds as they wait. God, we are so grateful that You work all things together for our good and Your purposes, including our times of waiting. Calm our hearts and help us to rest in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
