“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
James 1:17 (NIV)
Tonight, as I closed my computer screen, turned off the lights, and tried to sleep, grief overwhelmed me once again. Earlier today in church, I had felt an immense void and loneliness. As I lay in bed, I yearned to roll over and see Vic lying next to me, to feel his presence beside me, to rub his beard and hug his chest. But reality hit me instantly—I knew it was not to be. The deep, deep desire of my heart for the man I loved so much and missed beyond words crashed over me. I broke down in tears, crying out to God, pleading to hold him again, to feel his arms around me, and to tell him I love him.
At that moment, Gus, my faithful dog, who was lying next to me, immediately perked up when he heard my sobs. He rushed to my face, planting long, wet doggy kisses on my cheeks. Whether he was simply drying my tears or acting as a messenger from God to show me some love and comfort, I can’t be sure. But the latter thought brings me comfort, and I am choosing to believe it. What I do know is that five years ago, God knew exactly what He was doing when He moved Vic to let me bring Gus home. Gus was a wonderful therapy dog for Vic, and now he is a great companion and comforter to me. (Based on a journal entry I penned in the early years of my widowhood journey.)
Finding Light in the Darkness
In moments of deep grief and longing, it’s easy to feel as if the darkness will never lift. But James 1:17 reminds us that every good and perfect gift is from above, coming from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. This verse reassures us of God’s unchanging nature and His constant presence in our lives, even when we feel most alone.
As widows, the pain of losing our spouses can be overwhelming. We may find ourselves drowning in waves of sorrow, yearning for the presence of the one we loved so deeply. Yet, in those moments of despair, we can find comfort in knowing that God’s love for us is steadfast. He understands our pain and grief and offers His comfort through the gifts He places in our lives.
A Divine Gift: The Comfort of a Furry Companion
Gus, my furry companion, was one such gift. God knew the path I would walk and provided Gus to be by my side. Gus’ presence brought me immense comfort and joy. His companionship was a tangible expression of God’s love. It was a demonstration that He sees my pain and provides for me in ways I might not expect.
God’s Gifts Come in Many Forms
Sometimes they are the comforting presence of a pet, a friend’s timely phone call, or a beautiful sunrise that reminds us of His glory. These gifts are reflections of His love and care for us, tailored to our needs even before we recognize them.
As I reflect on today’s verse, I am reminded to look for God’s gifts even in the darkest times. These gifts, no matter how small, are evidence of His unchanging love. God’s nature is constant; He does not shift like shadows. His love and compassion for us remains the same, and His gifts are manifestations of that enduring love.
Cultivating Gratitude in Times of Grief
It’s essential to cultivate a heart of gratitude, even in our grief. By appreciating God’s gifts, we can find peace and joy amid sorrow. Gus’ presence reminded me daily to cherish God’s blessings and acknowledge His hand in my life. It taught me to look for God in the unusual and unexpected.
In your moments of deep longing and loneliness, may you find comfort in the good and perfect gifts God has placed in your life. Trust in His unchanging nature and His boundless love for you. Allow these gifts to remind you of His constant presence and care. As we journey through grief, let us hold onto the promise that our Heavenly Father, the giver of all good and perfect gifts, is with us, providing for our needs and surrounding us with His everlasting love.
Heavenly Father, thank You for every good and perfect gift that comes from above, from You, the Father of the heavenly lights. You do not change like shifting shadows. Help me to recognize and appreciate Your constant presence and unwavering love in my life. Amen.
