“Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
1 Peter 1:8-9 (ESV)
The things I’ve learned about love.
Evidence of love
We saw evidence of our husband’s love for us in so many different ways, didn’t we?
Hummingbird feeders
My husband, Steve, really didn’t have a ‘thing’ for hummingbirds, but he knew I did. Many times, I would catch him filling the feeders on the back porch so I could stand in awe of those tiny, fast-moving little hummers.
Then there was saving the plants from the threat of winter.
In Texas – Mother Nature is very good about ‘teasing’ us Texans that she is finished with the extreme heat and drought.
Forecasters proclaim, “Frost in the area, bring in your plants!”
So, the process begins.
- Cover the plants.
- Drag them into the garage for protection from the frost.
- Do it all over and over again as many times as necessary.
And plants were dragged in and out of that garage until the frost and freeze actually came.
Though the process was repeated over and over, he loved me and knew how much I loved those plants. There was evidence of that fact that I could literally lay my eyes on and see.
It was not only in the wintertime that Steve showed his love for me in the care of my plants. You can’t work so hard to save them through the winter just to let them die in the extreme heat of Texas in the summertime.
So many times, I would come home to find him with the water hose watering those same plants – quietly watching the force of the water blowing all the soil out of those pots.
Evidence of his love for me – shown in so many different ways.
Back to the Beginning
Evidence of God’s love at Creation
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:1 (ESV)
In Genesis 1:26-27, we read …
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
The things I have learned about God.
God is omnipotent – He has supreme power and has no limitations.
He is also omniscient, a new word for me. God is and always has been – all-knowing.
He never ‘needed’ anything, but still He ‘wanted’ fellowship with us.
God knew EVERYTHING, nothing was hidden from Him.
Upon creation, in a great desire to know man, He created this world –
all the time, knowing what would happen
between the beginning of this world and the end of it.
What does this mean for you and me?
In great love, we were created for such a special purpose – a great need recognized by God, Himself. Our husbands, created first, would have a need for a helper and God chose us to be one.
Oh, what an important place we held in God’s heart and our husbands’ lives. What a great privilege God gave to us.
But most importantly of all…
Upon creation, our all-knowing God knew that fellowship with us would be broken by sin. Because of His great desire for fellowship, He provided a way to return to His original plan. It would be a great sacrifice that would require the death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
And God did that for us.
His love for us was so evident on that cross.
“Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
I Peter 1:8 (ESV)
So many times, we were able to see first-hand the evidence of the love of our husbands and trust in His love for us.
We can truly trust the love of God, our Father – trust Jesus, the Son of God, and our Savior, and we can trust the Holy Spirit left here for us – our Comforter.
Living by Faith
“Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1 (CSB)
And may we never forget that we can trust our God to accomplish what He desired from the very beginning …
To fellowship with us.
Our Heavenly Father, thank You for Your great love and desire to fellowship with us and for the forgiveness of our sins through the sacrifice of Your Son. Help us to see that Your plan is being fulfilled even now in this season of our lives as You are experiencing that desired fellowship now with our husbands.
