“Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland”
Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)
As January unfolds, we are given a gift: the start of a new year. It’s a time when the world seems to pause, offering a fresh slate, an opportunity to reflect and move forward with hope. For widows like us, however, this season brings a mix of emotions. Memories of past years shared with our beloved husband linger, but the thought of facing a new year without his presence can bring hesitation and resistance to embracing what lies ahead.
God’s Presence in Every Emotion
Yet in every emotion, God is present. He is the same God who walked with you in years past and promises to remain by your side in the days to come. Whatever your heart carries as you step into this new year—grief, hope, or a mixture of both—rest in the assurance that God will meet you right where you are.
The turning of the calendar is more than a simple change in numbers; it’s a reminder of God’s power to bring about renewal. In Isaiah 43:18-19, God calls His people to let go of the past and open their eyes to the new work He is doing. This doesn’t mean forgetting the blessings or love that filled your life with your husband. Instead, it’s about making room in your heart for the fresh gifts, opportunities, and purposes God wants to bring into your life.
God is not finished with your story.
As you navigate life as a widow, you may face days when the weight of loss feels overwhelming. But remember this: God is a creator of new beginnings. He promises to make a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. What might that look like for you this year?
Steps Towards Renewal
- Start a journal where you record moments of God’s faithfulness each day or week. These reminders will strengthen your faith as you journey forward.
- Perhaps it’s deepening relationships with others. If you feel isolated, consider joining a grief support group, a Bible study, or a ministry where you can connect with others. God often uses community to bring healing and encouragement.
- Look for opportunities to use your gifts and experiences to bless others. Whether it’s walking alongside another widow, volunteering, or simply being a listening ear, your life has purpose and impact.
- Maybe God is nudging you to explore new passions or return to ones you set aside.
- It could be as simple, yet profound, as learning to embrace joy again, trusting that your grief and your hope can coexist in His presence.
- Trust that it’s okay to grieve and rest in God’s presence. Let Him renew your strength as you take each step forward.
An Invitation to Prayer
Take time this month to sit with God in prayer. Ask Him to show you the “new thing” He desires to do in your life. Write down what He places on your heart—whether it’s an impression, a scripture, or a specific step forward.
God’s Mercies Are New Every Morning
As you lean into His leading, remember the promise found in Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV):
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Even on the hardest days, God’s mercies are a fresh gift, sustaining you with His unfailing love.
As you journey through this new year, remember: you are never alone. The God who promises to do a new thing is walking beside you, carrying you when needed, and guiding you into His plans for your future. Trust Him, and watch as His faithfulness unfolds in your life.
A Prayer for the New Year
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness in every season of our lives. As we step into this new year, help us to let go of the burdens of the past while holding tightly to the blessings You’ve given us. Open our hearts to the new plans You have for us, and give us the courage to follow where You lead. When challenges come, remind us of Your constant presence and steadfast love. Fill our days with peace, strength, and joy as we walk in Your light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
